Q: Did you have any qualms about this symbol? Did you ever think it was too “branded” and “slick”?
A: We didn’t, though there were certainly instances where we sensed a need to be careful about its application. We never saw the candidate as being “branded,” in the sense of having an identity superficially imposed on the campaign. The identity was for the campaign, not just for the candidate. And to the degree that the campaign spoke to millions of people, it may have become a symbol for something broader — some have termed it a movement, a symbol of hope.
when I make graffiti in the street I don’t write my name. I developed a way to draw characters with one line, as a kind of tag that is a character and not a name. I decided to make a stop-motion animation piece of these “tags” as a way to show the movement of them being drawn. each frame was hand painted on a large sheet of paper, taped to my flatmate’s bedroom wall.

Der Maler, Graffiti Künstler, Musiker, Fotograf und Bildhauer Pablo Gonzalez aka Sozyone wuchs auf in einem Umfeld von Kleinkriminellen und Zuhältern in Brüssel auf. Um aus diesem Milieu zu entkommen begann er Kunst zu studieren. Es dauerte jedoch nicht lange, bis er dem ästhetischen Vanadalismus des Graffitis verfällt. 1996 gründet Sozyone zusammen mit Gold Jaba, Prince Pro, Turs, Byz und Cool Recto die “Ultra Boys International”. Die Crew macht sich mit ihrem radikalen Stil, einer Mixtur aus Marvel Comic, abstrakter Mathematik, alphabetischem Konstruktivismus und Picasso-ähnlichem Kubismus, schnell einen Namen über die Stadtgrenzen von Brüssel hinaus. 2004 schafft Sozyone mit seiner Arbeit den Sprung von der Strasse in die Galerien Europas.

Es ist Realität. Wir sprechen von der wohl gefährlichsten Gang Amerikas - der “Mara Salvatrucha“, auch bekannt unter der Abkürzung “MS-13″.
Vier Jahre ist es her, dass Callie Shell das erste mal auf Barack Obama traf. Backstage, bei einer Veranstaltung auf der sie den damaligen Präsidentschaftkandidaten John Kerry fotografieren sollte. Allerdings schickte sie ihrem zuständigen Redakteur mehr Bilder von Obama als von Kerry. Auf die Frage, warum sie ihn öfter fotografierte, antwortete sie: “Kein Ahnung. Ich habe so ein Gefühl, dass er mal eine wichtige Rolle spielen wird.” Seit dem ist sie immer wieder an seiner Seite gewesen und hat viele stimmungsvolle und intime Bilder von ihm gemacht. We’re excited to announce the availability of never-before-seen images from the LIFE photo archive. This effort to bring offline images online was inspired by our mission to organize all the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. This collection of newly-digitized images includes photos and etchings produced and owned by LIFE dating all the way back to the 1750s.
Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. We’re digitizing them so that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time. Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive — about 10 million photos.
